Sand

Sand is a granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles passing sieve 5.0mm and retained on 75 microns. Generally, sand can be classified into three categories from different prospects: Sand’s origin/source, composition and Grain size.

At EdCorp International we extract and sell washed clean lake sand free of any contaminations of organic matter and clay particles under the composition and origin categories respectively. For the Grain size category, we produce 3 sub categories that is; coarse sand, medium sand and fine sand. In regards to fineness modulus, our Course sand ranges from 4.0 to 2.4, Medium sand 2.8 to 1.5 and Fine sand 2.1 to 0.6 (BS EN 12620:2002).

Sand is mostly used for concreting (Ready mix concrete production, precast works), general mortar/masonry works (brick & block laying and plastering). Different construction works require different standards of sand for construction.

For instance; Brick/Block works normally require fineness modulus of fine sand which ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 and silt contents not more than 4% (BS 882:1992, US 101:2000).  Plastering works require Fineness modulus of fine sand of not more than 1.5 and silt content not more than 4%.  Concreting works require coarse sand and should be used with fineness modulus 2.5 to 3.5 and silt content should not be more than 4%.

Advantage of using washed clean lake sand and the right grain size for the aimed functionality are as follows:

  • High concrete compressive strength results will be attained.
  • Being cubical, rounded and smooth textured, it gives good workability
  • Reworks will be avoided and set project deadline dates will be met.
